Last month, we sent 7-year-old Malcolm to see if he could buy an alcoholic beverage after we found that; A) Differentiating between non-alcoholic beverages and alcoholic beverages is becoming increasingly difficult, and B) Though the legal drinking age in China is 18, enforcement of the law is lax, to put it mildly.

After we shared the video showing Malcolm successfully purchasing a drink containing 3% alcohol, we received numerous comments suggesting that we repeat the experiment with an older child, and without an adult nearby. So… we did!

When five interns from Western Academy of Beijing (WAB) came to intern with us last week under the World of Work initiative, we sent three of them, all of whom are below the legal drinking age, to try buying an alcoholic beverage. This time, they secretly filmed each other at two different convenience stores located in downtown Beijing. The result? Let’s find out!
